Photo Jewels bio picture
  • Hi there!

Welcome to my blog! I'm so glad you're here. I'm Julie, the Jules behind Photo Jewels, and a Rockwall, Texas, based photographer. I specialize in creating a high school senior portrait experience for my client that will be remembered for a lifetime!

Since 2008, I've been in love with what I do, and I think it shows!

Grab a cup of coffee, take a look around and see what I've been up to!

Sweet & smiley Lauren!  This Dallas Christian senior couldn’t be any cuter!  Plus she has the most fun, bubbly personality to match.  She is always smiling, always laughing. We had a simply perfect fall day for her session…. beautiful sunny skies, some leaves…. I mean, fall in Texas is pretty awesome even if we don’t have tons of color change!  How cute is her little plaid shirt dress?  I think it was a perfect fit with the rustic barn.  So thankful that Lauren chose me for her senior portraits…. we had such a fun time!

Meet beautiful Addison from Dallas Christian! Between her and her mom, I don’t think you could ask to work with two sweeter people!  She has such a natural, pretty smile and a sunny disposition.  I think I love these first ones we shot at the park the best… they’re soft and sweet but also show some personality.

We had such a fun time at her shoot and incorporated just a little bit of basketball into her shoot (since she is a bball superstar!)  I am so glad they chose me to capture this time in Addison’s life!

Hello Adorable Avery!  This blonde beauty has the sweetest smile and is such a classy girl!  Seriously, she shows so much maturity for her years!  I love these very first images in her burnt orange dress.  You never know what you’re going to find at the creek…. sometimes we see fish, plenty of trash, people fishing, people on a date, a shopping cart or two (not sure how that makes it down there), and more times than once I have seen some undergarments!  Anyway, you’d never know it because when Avery’s in the frame, all you can see is her!

This girl is one of my senior models and she brings a gentle grace to the group. She’s off this fall to UT Austin to fulfill her dreams of nursing school!

Meet Cami! This sweet and photogenic senior has legs for days! In fact, the image she chose for her wall portrait happened to be one where she could show that off (one of the standing shots below in the hat!). I wish everyone could see the printed versions of these photos rather than just a computer or phone screen. There is a such a big impact made with a gorgeous, big piece of art hanging on your wall!

We were actually supposed to use an urban location for the 2nd half of her session.  However, there was a big rally/protest happening in downtown Dallas on that same afternoon and we kinda bucked that plan!  No need to get mixed up in all that and possibly ruin the last half of her shoot!

Anyway, Cami is one of my senior models this year and she has brought such a fun, energetic vibe to the group.  She’s laid back, confident and just a lot of fun to have around. Anddddd she’s also a softball start and headed to Colorado this fall to play at the college level.  I can’t wait to see what the next few years hold for her!

Each fall I work hard to put together a huge styled shoot featuring my PJP Senior Models.  The theme is revealed to the girls months in advance, so they have plenty of time to put together outfits to carry out the look and feel we’re going for. This shoot is an all day deal.  We start with professional hair and makeup early in the day.  Each girl has a custom look that is determined ahead of time.  While some girls are in H&MU, others get to lounge around in my home studio space, snack and watch a movie or two.

What I probably love about these shoots is the creative freedom.  The door is swung wide open for me to come up with a unique concept and watch it come to life.  There is no pressure to shoot what a believe a client will want to purchase, or to get a shot that might be perfect for a fall portrait or an album cover.  Don’t get me wrong… I absolutely love working with my regular clients to produce senior portraits that truly capture the subject as they are… but I enjoy the freedom of a creative concept shoot as well.

My idea this time revolved around a modern take to the tribal look.  A little boho, and little Native American (hey, my grandpa was 1/4 Indian), with lots of texture and mostly earthy tones (with a little turquoise thrown in for contrast!)  I think the results are pretty stunning, and my girls pulled this all off magically.  Making a special appearance was Camryn’s horse, Mae, who was a bit spooked being out of her normal pasture, but modeled for me, nonetheless.  Also making one of its last appearances was Dylan’s orange vintage Dodge truck, which sadly suffered unsustainable injuries in a collision a couple months following our shoot.  RIP Dylan’s Dodge.

We suffered through sweat and spiders, but made it out alive.  And no photo shoot is complete without a little dance party at the end, too.  Check it out.  🙂

It’s May, which means it’s time for what seems to becoming a tradition around here – the SENIOR SPARKLE!  This is a fun shoot because it includes not only my current senior models, but also the up-and-coming senior models who will take their place for the following school year!

I love this tradition because the girls get to wear their gorgeous prom gowns (and who doesn’t want the chance to wear their dress more than once!?).  I ask the senior to wear long dresses, and the juniors to wear shorter party dresses.  And everyone in cowboy boots!

It’s a unique shoot because it caps the year for my current seniors…. it’s the last official photo shoot and get together we will have before they graduate. By this point in the year, these girls have done 3 other photo shoots together and many social outings.  They are comfy and confident with each other, and it’s fun to see those relationships develop over the year.

For the juniors, it’s their very first time in front of the camera together as a group.  And it’s a sort of “passing of the torch” between the older and younger girls.

I love it and think it’s a great segue into the next class of PJP senior models.

First, meet my beautiful 2016-17 senior models:  Erin, Carly, Jordan, Jayden, Katy, Caroline, Keila, and Jordan (We missed Destinee this shoot!)

Check out Ali’s amazing session!  She and her mom put some thought into things and we were able to incorporate some favorite things into her shoot.  I love getting to include items that are personal or tell a story through the photos without making it cheezy!  Ali has been longboarding for years and so it seemed natural to include that in her shoot. LOVED the different looks we did for hair.  Oh, which reminds me…. all of my senior girls have the option to add on-location hair and makeup to their sessions.  My custom artist not only comes to your home to the original hair and makeup (HMU), but also tags along on-set and changes your look with every outfit.  Pretty cool…. always makes me wish I was a HS senior again!

After a little thinking, I came up with a location that I felt like could meet all of her “wants” for her shoot…. water, longboarding, her camera, and the drama of her prom gown at the end.  Ali is an artist herself, so whenever I hear that, it always makes me wanna push things a little further than I might otherwise.

In this case, that meant pushing things into the dark.  It was literally like so dark at the end, that all the cars passing by had headlights on.  We were around this pond and long grass and I just knew a big nasty snake was going to crawl across my foot or something.  Anyway, along with dark comes cool silhouettes…. and just kinda a more hazy editing look that I had fun with!

Enough from me… enjoy Ali!  Oh, and she’s off to Baylor this fall (Sic’em!)

Mackenzie is a creative superstar who did not want to be put in a box!  I think you could probably guess that with her vibrant red hair?!?  Anyway, even though we started out with her gorgeous gatsby-themed prom gown, she really wanted to juxtapose it with a more natural, woodsy landscape.  Then the rest of her shoot was dedicated to just capturing her unique style.  Check out her last rockabilly themed look…. love, love it!  She totally pulled it off perfectly.  She’s off to study art at OU this fall.  🙂
